Scandinavian Influence

Norway House: Whole Home Remodeling & Design

This whole-house interior restoration consists of creating a master suite along with a gourmet kitchen using cork flooring and mahogany cabinets. A new entrance to the mud room and laundry, along with a powder room, will be added on the main floor. The lower level will be finished with a bedroom/living room and full bath. This 1960's contemporary rambler has a Scandinavian influence and Traci Dokken Designs preserved the architecture throughout the home. Come check out Project Norway!

A special note about this project from the daughter of the original architect:

My Dad, Jackson Griswold was an architect, and somewhat progressive for the times.  In 1955 he designed and built a small home in the woods near Lake Minnetonka to raise his three daughters, and carry through into his empty nester days.  In as much as he was a student of the Frank Lloyd Wright era, you will see design elements in the original construction, and the new renovations, that are subtle reminders of that era. The low pitch roof, the wide eaves, the positioning of the house to make use of the sun and the shade depending on the time of year, the use of lots of glass and douglas fir trim all point to that genre.

My Dad lived in that home until his death in 2008. And circumstances being what they were at the time, it made sense for us to sell the family home. Enter Traci Dokken Designs. The moment they walked into the house, they could see the potential. They could clearly see that the bones of the house were strong and sturdy. And more than that, they were able to envision the changes that the house needed to bring it into 2012. Traci “got” what my Dad had designed and built. And all the renovations that she knew were needed only enhanced the original vision.

With a stunning new kitchen, master bath, a new powder bath, and a completely remodeled lower level, Traci created a home that is not only beautiful, but one that maintains the aesthetics of the original design. And from the standpoint of seeing “my” house being cared for this way, it’s just simply a wonderful feeling knowing that someone loves and cares for this house as much as my family did. Jackson Griswold would be SO thrilled. His daughters certainly are. Thank you Traci for honoring this home and its heritage!
